This themed volume of Gateways journal celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, with co-sponsorship from the American Council on Education. Articles published in this volume both honour its remarkable impact, both in the United States and elsewhere, and explore how lessons from the past two decades might shape next steps. In addition, this volume also introduces the new Carnegie Elective Classification for Sustainability.
