Introduction
The Australasian Journal of Construction Economics and Building - Conference Series invites manuscripts that deal with any aspect of the economics and management of building and construction, quantity surveying and property management as set out in the ‘Focus and Scope’ of the journal. Preference will be given to papers that deal with original research,
Papers should be written and arranged in a style that is succinct and easily followed. An informative title, a concise abstract and a well written introduction will help to achieve this. Simple language, short sentences and a good use of headings all help to communicate information more effectively. Figures and tables should be used to aid the clarity of the paper, not to pad it out. It is strongly recommended that non-English speaking authors seek assistance from a competent English writer to ensure that grammar, spelling and style are correct.
Submission
Papers may be submitted through conference organisers only.
Manuscripts shall be typed with single spacing, 11 point typeface and fully justified using a modified Harvard style of referencing as outlined below.. The first page of the manuscript shall contain the full title, up to five key words or descriptors that clearly describe the subject matter of the paper and an abstract that does not exceed 200 words and précis the paper with a clear indication of the conclusions.
All graphics and tables must be embedded in the manuscript near the first reference to the corresponding figure or table and must be no wider than 13.5 cm. Any graphics that goes in the paper must also be submitted as separate files, including any graphics created in Microsoft Word. Figures and Tables must be clearly labelled as Figure or Table 1, Figure or Table 2, etc., at the bottom of the figure, left justified, numbered in sequence, and must be referenced within the text of the article. Alternatively the term 'Exhibits' may be used to cover both Figures and Tables. It is the responsibility of the author/s to obtain permission for the use of any illustrations, tables or artwork for which they do not hold copyright.
All authors need to register. On the date of publication The Australasian Journal of Construction Economics and Building - Conference Series will announce the new issue and registered readers will be notified by email.
Style and Referencing
Use UK/Australian spelling such as ‘behaviour’, ‘colour’, ‘analyse’ and ‘organisation’ (does not apply to quotes, titles and references). Measurements should be given in metric units. If other units are used, the metric equivalent should be given in parenthesis. Use present tense when discussing the literature and your findings whenever possible.
Use a single (not a double) space after full stops and other punctuation. Do not put a space in front of a question mark, or in front of any other closing quotation mark. The beginning of a new paragraph should be indicated by a space made by a double carriage return (not an indent). Insert page numbers on the bottom right hand corner of each page. Limit headings to three levels. The first level (for the title of the paper) should be 16pt bold. The second level (for subheadings) should be 12 pt bold, and if a third level is necessary use 12pt italic text. Capitalise the first letters of words in titles and headings. Subheadings should be separated from the preceding paragraph by a space, but do not put a space before the paragraph immediately following the subheading. For further details, see the text formatting guidelines below.. Do not use any word processing options/tools, such as strike through, hidden text, comments and merges.
Text Formatting Guidelines
Use Full Stops after abbreviations but not in the case of contractions (Dr, Prof) or capitalised abbreviations (NSW, USA). Use Capitals only for proper nouns or to avoid ambiguity. If referring more than once to an organisation, place etc use Full Title first followed by an abbreviation or contraction in parentheses: eg the United Nations (UN). Use single Quotation Marks for quotes. ‘Use “double quote marks” within single quotes’ for quotations within quotations. Quotations of more than three lines should be indented. Use (…) for breaks within quotations but not at the beginning of quotes. Use Italics sparingly for emphasis or uncommon or foreign words. Dates should be expressed by day, month and year (1 July 2010) though this must be First of July used at the beginning of sentences. Use 1920s not 1920’s and 1959-60 not 1959-1960. Only use underline if used in a quotation. Use [Square Brackets] for interpolations.
Referencing Style: Modified Harvard System
In-text referencing (note that for direct quotes page number should also be stated):
(1) Single author: “Smith (2003) stated that …” OR “ … regardless of location, size and budget (Smith 2003)
(2) Two or three authors: “Hardy and Lammer (1996) suggested …” OR “… from previous studies" (Hardy & Lammar 1996, p. 53).
(3) More than three authors “Neto et al. (2007) showed that …” OR … the client is the most important stakeholder (Neto et al. 2007).
(4) When citing an anonymous work, use the title in italics and year if there is no author (Generating the master plan for hospitals 2002).
For electronic references, use the same principles as for books. However, as electronic sources often do not contain page numbers, use the paragraph number preceded by the abbreviation para. If the author’s name is unknown, cite the website URL.
Add a, b, c, etc. to distinguish between two or more references with the same author or editor name and the same year. List a string of references in chronological order, and separate them by semi-colons.
Include links to internet sources in text and/or bibliography.
