Abstract
Government House was constructed in the mid 19th century and represents a dual manifestation of the forces of tradition and modernism. The site demonstrates how, in the context of colonialism, the retention and expansion of tradition necessarily relies upon the characteristics of modernity as it seeks to transform and homogenize a new territory.
