First steps in learning analytics with LearnTrak

A gradual approach to the use of learning analytics is being implemented at the University of Canterbury. To help create a more supportive campus environment, early identification of students in academic difficulty will be made through the data provided by the Learning Management System. This first step in using learning analytics requires lecturers to be aware of students’ engagement in their courses, so the Electronic Learning Media team (ELM) have implemented a tool within the Moodle learning management system which will enable easily accessible visualisation of data. It is hoped that this implementation will enable lecturers to effectively engage with learning analytics data to identify students’ lack of engagement early in a course, as well as encouraging lecturers to become part of the early intervention process. This presentation will provide an overview of the tool itself and the way in which lecturers are using it in their teaching practice.
