Workshop 1: Open-Source Learning Analytics and “what the student does”
Last modified: 2012-09-20
Abstract
Practical learning analytics ‘dashboards’ that show students at risk are emerging and will likely become commonplace over the next few years. But how do we determine who is at risk? We advocate a focus on “what the student does” echoing Biggs’ seminal article on teacher understandings of learning. Teachers need access to tools that let them articulate what activities lead to learning in their own context. But making best use of these tools introduces a messy milieu of open/closed algorithms, the ethics/efficacy of intervening with at-risk students, and the challenge of articulating learning outcomes.
This session builds on the development of the open-source Engagement Analytics dashboard for Moodle.
