Dinosaurs and dung beetles

Sandie Jessamine

Abstract

Dinosaurs and Dung Beetles is a story about my son, Jordan, who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome just before his seventh birthday. It explores the distress he experienced in his first eighteen months of schooling and my initial attempt to 'fix' him so that he'd fit in. The story follows the blossoming of Jordan's uniqueness. It also examines the path I took towards understanding and accepting my son just as he is. This included challenging the hegemony of normalcy and assumptions I'd internalised about 'bad' mothers causing 'problematic' children. I can relax and enjoy Jordan's company so much more when this debris is removed from our relationship.
