Title: Cooperative Competitive Strategies: Australian Electronics Cluster Development
Author: Killen Catherine; Hunt Robert
Abstract: Cooperative competitive strategies are helping Australian Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to increase their global competitive advantage. There are many forms that cooperative strategies can take, and in recent years industry clusters have gained popularity in Australia as a form of competitive strategy. While industry clusters have often been thought of as having evolved organically, many successful clusters have been developed or enhanced by cluster development programs. The Australian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers' Association (AEEMA) has been progressive in the development of industry clusters in regions of Australia. AEEMA has identified further areas for cluster development and the Australian Government has recently provided funding to assist AEEMA to defme and document a commercial framework for cluster development. GPC, an Australian SME and a member of AEEMA, is a world competitive contract electronics manufacturer. This paper outlines GPC's use of cooperative competitive strategies and the AEEMA cluster development process.
