Photonic bandgap effects as a basis for novel compact devices

Abstract

Photonic crystals offer the opportunity to design ultra-compact optical devices. Here we consider the "folded directional coupler," which combines elements of a directional coupler and a Fabry-Perot interferometer. This device can act as a reflection notch filter and can be made as short as a few micrometers.
