Abstract:
Tourism study embraces a wide range of disciplines. The challenge is how to
select and package the material from such a wide range of sources to provide students with
sufficient grounding in each of the fields, but also to form a coherent body of knowledge.
Drawing on experience in Australia, this paper raises the question of what frameworks
should be used to assist students to make sense of such a diverse range of material.
Considering three model of course design, the job analysis/competencies model, the liberal
education model and finally what he calls the 'lego' model, author suggests alternatives, the
framework model and systems model.
