Abstract:
This paper examines attitudes towards bribery in Australia by replicating
Tsalikis and LaTour (1995) study that contrasted attitudes to bribery between
respondents in Greece and the USA. The first aspect investigated was how
attitudes in Australia differed from those in other countries including Greece and
the USA. Because of the multicultural character of Australia, responses of those
claiming to be of non-Australian background were compared to those of
Australian background. It was found that ,those of Australian background were
more critical of bribery than those of non-Australian background. Responses of
those of non-Australian background who had lived in Australia for more than
four years were compared to responses of those who had lived in the country for
four years or less. It was found that the former group tended to adopt attitudes
towards bribery similar to those of Australian background reflecting the effect of
acculturation.
