Abstract:
It is well known girls had been under represented in sport and physical
activities. Although sport opportunities for girls have greatly
improved over recent years, girls still participate less than boys. In
addition, there is a substantial drop-out of girls during the teenage
years. This article focuses on initiatives to increase teenage girls
participation in sport and physical activities. Good practice case
studies from New South Wales (Australia) were identified across a
wide range of sports and populations. The 25 case studies included
national, state, and regional sporting organisations, as well as a
YMCA, a police and community youth club, and school and local
councils. Special population groups, such as indigenous and culturally
diverse girls, those with disabilities, and youth at risk were included
in the study.
Analyses of case studies revealed a number of elements contributed
toward increased participation. Three elements were crucial for involving
girls in physical activity programs-design the program for
a particular target group based on identified needs, have support of
senior management, and work in partnerships with other agencies.
It was recommended that service providers consider these key elements
when planning sport and recreation programs for teenage girls.
