Abstract:
Students from the Bachelor of Education (primary) program undertake practicums in a wide range of
countries. This research project investigates the nature and extent of teacher trainees' learning beyond
the vocational teaching expertise. They recorded their encounters with nationals in the People's
Republic of China. The study seeks to look outside-the-classroom encounters and the learning
implications these have for the visiting pre-service teachers. Aspects of intercultural education are
discussed by Said (1978); Giroux (1991); Halse & Buchanan (1998). Grant and Ladson-Billings (1997)
observe that intercultural communication requires an understanding of cultural and social norms that
operate in any communicative situation. Prejudice, ignorance and arrogance versus acceptance,
understanding and tolerance are discussed through the encounters experienced.
