Abstract:
It is well documented that smoking during pregnancy and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke has serious health
consequences for both the mother and the newborn child. While there have been many programs developed which target
pregnant women and provide advice and assistance in smoking cessation, little attention has been given to their partners and
family members. This project was conducted in order to improve the information provided to pregnant women and their
partners around smoking in pregnancy. An educational campaign developed in the United Kingdom was tested with focus
groups of women and translated into Arabic and Chinese. Education for midwives and doctors also took place and a new
protocol has been developed.
