Abstract:
Problem-based learning (PBL) relies on problems or situations (prosits) to stimulate the
acquisition of knowledge pertaining to a field of study. A questionnaire to evaluate the quality
of different prosits in a PBL biology program at UQAM was given in 1999 to 117 students.
We analyzed the results of this survey in relation to motivational dynamics based on
a model by Viau (1999) to determine the components that could enhance the qualities of a
prosit to increase student motivation. Based on our survey, students: 1) seem to prefer problems
that are realistic but presented in a variety of formats, 2) want to be challenged, and
3) are concerned about the allotment of time devoted to their study.
