Abstract:
•Like most hospital decisions
today, data-driven analysis is
utilized to find the staff, products,
and services that will
deliver the best outcome -
nursing education is no
exception.
•Through an analysis of patient
discharge data including ORG,
ICO-9,and length of stay data,
one institution gained insight
into characteristics of their
patient population that ultimately
drove their educational
agenda.
•Their analysis revealed a surprising
concentration of respiratory
diagnoses accounting
for their three most common
reasons for pediatric admission:
asthma, bronchiolitis.
and pneumonia.
•Focusing on nursing-sensitive
outcomes. the 2-hour education
program reviewed pediatric
respiratory anatomy.
physiology, and pathophysiology
in addition to assessment,
treatment, and key
infection control measures.
• The focus on respiratory care
competency drove other
changes in clinical policy and
practices related to medication
administration and infection
control that ultimately led
to a reduction in nosocomial
RSV infections.
