Abstract:
This paper reports on an investigation into the effect lack of management skills has on the
performance of small building companies. The study noted that most of these companies are
run by self-taught migrants who have poor communication skills. Despite this most of them
are eager to improve their managerial skills and this paper canvases the idea that such a group
needs a special educational strategy based on oral communication. The suggestion is made
that a "mentoring" program may be the most efficient way of reaching these contractors.
