Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present some initial findings from an investigation into strategies for improving
class participation in tutorials and small lectures in the Information Technology (IT) context. The research
used a qualitative approach and data collection was undertaken using student focus groups and semistructured
interviews with academics in an Australian IT Faculty. The findings highlight various reasons why
students do or don’t participate. Also strategies which academics can utilise to encourage student participation
in IT tutorials and small lectures were discovered.
