Abstract:
Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is a light-weight and strong building material. It can provide
good insulation for heat and sound, and is good for fireproofing and waterproofing. In this paper, major
mechanicalbehavior of the AAC blocks is presented. The AAC blocks were used in constructing YinHai Plaza - a
large building complex in GuangDong, China. In its seismic structural design, the use of the AAC blocks is
compared with the regular clay bricks. The advantages of the AAC blocks are discussed. The construction procedures
are described and issues of using the AAC blocks in construction are presented. Some drawbacks in its
wider application in large building projects in China are also discussed.
