Abstract:
This paper presents the performance of a semi-active stiffness damper in a Five-Storey Model under
four benchmark earthquakes through simulation work. The system consists of a hydraulic damper that
is connected to the bracing frame in a selected storey unit. Linear Quadratic Regulator is used to
investigate the system performance. It focuses on the effectiveness of the control system with varying
numbers of hydraulic dampers and their locations. Nine control cases of one, two, three and five
hydraulic dampers are developed. The results show that semi-active stiffness dampers effectively
control the response of the model. The number and location of hydraulic dampers must be selected
appropriately to achieve the best results.
