dc.description.abstract This seminar is Part 1 of Seminar 7 of the 2007 Cosmopolitan Civil Societies Lecture Series. Sam Blay expands on his earlier lecture by further debating what Cosmopolitan Civil Society means from the legal perspective. The very fact that the interpretation of Cosmopolitan Civil Societies differs markedly between different schools of thought gives it it’s ‘flavour and essence’. For example, it means something different to a lawyer as compared with a political scientist’s understanding of “civil society”. Cosmopolitan civil societies is taking on increasing significance and represents interesting scope for enquiry amongst the legal faculty. This seminar discusses how, when understanding cosmopolitan civil societies from the legal perspective one goes about the process of dissecting the “civil-ness” of society on one hand and the cosmopolitan element on the other hand. Cosmopolitan civil societies are understood as “diverse social and cultural groupings that are united by this common, underlying humanity and sense of values”. en_AU
