Abstract:
Sensor networks are already being used in many different situations
where regular monitoring is needed and installation is difficult or requires
rapid deployment. However, the potential for privacy violations,
especially eavesdropping and data tampering, is a serious concern. In
this paper the privacy issues surrounding sensor networks are examined
and different solutions are evaluated, both technical and non-technical.
It is concluded that a comprehensive solution is needed which will
involve technical, legal and behavioural components. The technical
solutions required involve the development of new security mechanisms
as well as addressing the fundamental issue of the limited energy capacity
of the motes upon which sensor networks rely.
