Abstract
This paper will investigate the utilisation and application of various 'traditional' textile processes and surface embellishments such as; hand printing, applique, knitting and beadwork through to contemporary practices including
digital printing, which has been used to create trompe l'oeil effects within fashion design. With advancements in digital
printing processes, contemporary and avant-garde designers are constantly experimenting with these new techniques
and pushing the boundaries even further. This paper will also focus on the various designers that have utilised trompe
l'oeil throughout the past eighty years, and the textile applications and hand crafted processes that have been employed
historically to produce these illusional effects. To conclude, I will question whether or not these rich and quite often
ethereal elements of surface embellishment, could be lost with the fashion and textile industry embracing digital
printing processes to create fashion that fools.
