Abstract:
In 2004 the opportunities for audience participation are magnified by widespread
access to digital technology. Artists work with computers and digital media in order
to create artworks in complex and varied ways. Collaboration between technologists,
that is those primarily expert in computing, and artists frequently creates new forms of
interaction between artist and computer. This chapter discusses the role of technology
in interactive art. It draws from a field with a multi-disciplinary character, combining
new developments in interactive digital technology with research into the associated
human issues. Categories of interactive art systems defined as static, dynamic-passive,
dynamic-interactive and dynamic-interactive (varying) are extended and illustrated
by examples of work from the author.
