dc.description.abstract The soundtrack for Rowan Woods? The boys (Australia 1997), by Sydney minimalist jazz group the Necks, provides a distinctive example of an Australian film score which contributes `cinesonic substance? to the film?s exploration of masculine violence. This article explores both the improvisational modalities of the Necks? music, and the band?s role in creating music for Woods? film. Devised according to a `juxtapositional? aesthetic responding to the film?s locations, characters and situations, the Necks? music for The boys matches the elliptic aesthetic of the film while also functioning in its own right as `cinesonic? music. en_US
