Abstract:
Our research into cultural and commercial relationships and patterns in the Indian
Ocean (from pre- to post-colonial times) starts with the natural imperatives of
monsoon winds permitting trade and settlement, and with the availability of natural
wealth. In the middle period, of colonisation and industry, nature disappears from
view as an ‘actor’ in the network (Latour), only to reappear today as a signatory to the
complex ‘natural contract’ (Serres) which will allow cultural and commercial growth
to continue under postindustrial conditions. Nature, no single deity, is best conceived
of ‘multinaturally’ (Stengers), and the interpretation of its laws is a way of listening to
its arguments.
