Abstract:
Thispapertakesupunderstandingsoforganisationswherepracticesconstituteandframepastandpresentwork,aswellasfutureworkpracticepossibilities.Withinthisview,workpractices,andthusorganisations,arebothperpetuatedandvariedthroughemployees¿enactmentsofwork.Usingapracticelens,weareparticularlyinterestedinthewaysworkerssimultaneouslymaintainandalterpracticesintheirworkplace¿wecharacterisethisasre-makingone¿sjob.Thisperspectivechallengeswaysinwhichmanagersoftendepictjobsandeverydaywork¿asrational,linearandeasilydescribable.Wesuggestthatworkersatvariouslevelsofresponsibilitycontributemoretotheformationoforganisationalpracticesthanisoftenassumed.Theprocessesofre-makingjobsandremakingorganisationalpracticescreatetensionsthatwepositassitesforlearning.ThispaperaddressestheseissuesthroughafocusonworkpracticesintwoAustralianorganisationsthathavebeenundergoingsignificantculturalchange.
