A PLAN OF ACTION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION
Last modified: 2008-08-31
Human rights education can play a positive role in enhancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and can contribute to the prevention of human rights violations and the promotion of human rights and sustainable human development. Poverty remains a major impediment to the full realisation of human rights in the South Asian countries and emphasises that poverty eradication is essential for effective implementation of human rights education programs. While the work of Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and its micro-credit concept has been a worldwide recognised method of grass-root level poverty eradication the speaker will elaborate the equivalent need for participatory, pluralistic and non-discriminatory human rights education in South Asia Region. This presentation will also demonstrate how the Australian voluntary efforts and grass-root level cooperation can play a key role in human rights education to achieve regional peace and stability in the wake of global terrorism.
